Time for Friday puzzle – Can you think laterally?

Posted on: December 3, 2010

THE MAN IN ELEVATOR

A man lives on the tenth floor of a building. Every day he takes the elevator to go down to the ground floor to go to work or to go shopping.

When he returns he takes the elevator to the seventh floor and walks up the stairs to reach his apartment on the tenth floor.

Now the question / puzzle:

He hates walking so why does he do it?

A clue: on rainy days he goes up in the elevator to the tenth floor

This is probably the best known and most celebrated of all lateral thinking puzzles. It is a true Lateral thinking puzzles classic.

Although there are many possible solutions which fit the initial conditions, only the canonical answer is truly satisfying. Try to solve the puzzle and you can put your thoughts by making comments.

I will post the Answer on Monday! Till then, you can post your answers!

I agree with the one having answer that his haight might be short , so he wont be able to reach 10th floor button

perhaps there are windows on the stairs between the seventh and tenth floor that he enjoys looking out of? The view is dreary when it rains so he foregoes this activity on rainy days.

No comments because i m busy in exams 🙂

the logic in circulation is, the man is short in height so on dry days his hand reach the button to 7th floor, while in rainy days with the help of umbrella, he can reach to the tenth floor button

His wife scolds him if he enter in house with dirty shoes so he clean them on stairs from 7th to 10th floor. On rainy days shoes get dirty by walking up to his apartment so he use elevator.

he takes elevator to the 7th as he is short heighted and his hand cant reach 10th floor button…

on rainy days he wears rain boots which is elevated and makes it possible for him to reach the 10th floor button.
