Are you a leader or a manager?

Leaders are the architects while managers are builders. While managers are concerned about getting things done, leaders are concerned with what those things mean to people.

Management is about ‘control’ while leadership focusses on creation of a ‘common vision’.

A person can manage ‘Things’ but not people. People are ‘led’ not managed.

Four roles of a leader:
1. Modeling – a leader is a role model. He / she sets a good example for others to follow
2. Path finding – a leader helps people to find their path (with them)
3. Aligning; and
4. Empowering – a leader has his / her focus on results and gets out of people’s way.

Leadership is communicating to people their worth and potential so clearly that they come to see it in themselves.

Leadership cannot be taught. It can be ‘learnt’.

A person needs to learn the key characteristics associated with ‘leadership’ which include:
– Vision
– Discipline
– Passion and
– Conscience
